Before the match, many were predicting Valverde’s move in regards to his defense. Umtiti and Pique were both one booking away from suspension and the coach did not have Javier Mascherano at his disposable after the Argentine picked up an injury during international duty. This left many wondering which players in the back would start against Leganes.

However, the former Athletic Club man took the risk and started both Umtiti and Gerard Pique and it has cost him as Pique received a yellow card in the second half of the match. His booking means he will be suspended for Barcelona’s difficult visit to the Estadio Mestalla to take on second place contenders Valencia.

The Catalans have a full-pact calender ahead of them, filled with tough opponents before Christmas break and Barcelona must improve their style of play and their game on the pitch in order to finish the first part of the season successfully.

With the awful and tragic democratic issues taking place in Catalonia, the match between Barcelona and Las Palmas seemed to be suspended; however, the last minute decision made by president Josep Maria Bartomeu declared it would go on but would be behind closed doors.

The players, who are accustomed to their 90,000 supporters cheering them on once they step onto the pitch, arrived to a silent field. The current news surrounding this city had taken a toll on Ernesto Valverde’s men and it was displayed in the game, as they were all out of sync with each other and did not demonstrate that fierce and hungry attitude to score goals.

Although, that did not stop the team from picking up another win in the domestic league. After a disconnected first-half, Sergio Busquets was the unlikely hero in the 49th minute, scoring a goal in the silent Camp Nou.

20 minutes later, Lionel Messi stepped up to the plate and netted two to sentence the match.

Luis Suarez’s outrageous antics in the final minutes of the game added to the strange afternoon. The Uruguayan striker was frustrated with himself after failing to get on the scoreboard again, which resulted in the player tearing up his shirt and walking off the field. The Catalans ended the game with only 10 men.
