Stunning performances from Luis Suarez, Marc ter Stegen, and Samuel Umtiti secure the three golden points in LaLiga for Barcelona.
Thanks to two brilliant goals from Suarez, who has been recently struggling to find his goalscoring form, and a late minute goal from new signing Paulinho, Barca walk away from this tough fixture with a sweet taste in their mouths.
Although the game did not at any time meet the Barcelona standard all fans love and admire, the Catalans reached their objective, which was adding another win in the league.
Leganes produced several dangerous attacks, frustrating Messi and Co., but with Umtiti’s rock-solid solid defense and ter Stegen’s world-class stops, Ernesto Valverde’s men leave with three important points, as they continue their domination on LaLiga table with 34 points.
Suarez bagged two, one came in the first half and his second in the latter half. He gave a strong and convincing performance, forcing his critics to crawl back into their holes.
Before the match, many were predicting Valverde’s move in regards to his defense. Umtiti and Pique were both one booking away from suspension and the coach did not have Javier Mascherano at his disposable after the Argentine picked up an injury during international duty. This left many wondering which players in the back would start against Leganes.
However, the former Athletic Club man took the risk and started both Umtiti and Gerard Pique and it has cost him as Pique received a yellow card in the second half of the match. His booking means he will be suspended for Barcelona’s difficult visit to the Estadio Mestalla to take on second place contenders Valencia.
The Catalans have a full-pact calender ahead of them, filled with tough opponents before Christmas break and Barcelona must improve their style of play and their game on the pitch in order to finish the first part of the season successfully.
The Blaugrana take on Juventus in Turin on Wednesday in the Champions League. Don’t miss out on this highly anticipated match between two European giants.
